In this spirit, all the posts on the site today are from womenfrom readers and writers both, writing about whatever issue or topic is in the front of their minds at the moment. Some wrote about diversity. Some about raising the next generation of readers. Some wrote about kitties and the work of writing. This years IWD feels particularly necessary. In my own country, abortion access is being passive-aggressively whittled away by condescending patronizers who claim to only have womens best interests at heart. One of our leading Presidential candidates is a raging misogynist  whose hateful idiocy would, I believe, actively lead to more violence toward and oppression of women. One in seven women in the U.S. lives in povertya state a woman is even more likely to find herself in if she is not white, or has a disability. The work of feminism feels like a one-step-forward-two-steps-back game. Over 800,000 people are trafficked into slavery every year across international borders 80% of those people are women. Over 10 million underaged girls across the world are married off before they turn 18. Women carry the greater burden of poverty globally. Racism and its feminist counterpoint (White feminism) ensure that the problems most relevant to white, Western, straight, able-bodied women are focused on the most, while issues facing women of color, women in poverty, LGBTQ women, and disabled women are ignored or erased (for example, 2015 saw the highest murder rate of trans women in U.S. historyalmost all of the victims were women of colorand media coverage of the crimes was almost non-existent). The book world has its own sexism issues. Every year, the VIDA count shows us how books by men are reviewed more than books by women, and how male reviewers are given bylines more often than female reviewers. Over 85% of the literary Nobel Prize winners  are men. On a personal note, the days when we publish articles here at Book Riot about sexism in the book world are the days I get the most harassment on social media for daring to let it happen. Men have attacked my character, my appearance, my ability to parent my children, and my sanity, all in response to things I have said about sexism in the book world.  The men on our staff do not experience this. Not ever. Obviously, we have more work to do for women. Weve decided to focus on International Womens Day today here at Book Riot because we believe that books can change people. Reading can make you more empathetic, and thats where social change begins, isnt it? At the place where you begin to empathize with other human beings, recognize their humanity and give weight to their suffering, feel anger at the injustices they experience. So today, we give the platform over exclusively to women writers and readers from all over the world, and from all backgrounds. We will talk about fantasy novels, comic books, literary fiction, nonfiction, essays, young adult novels, and childrens books that have moved us. Tonight, we will go home and read them. And tomorrow (and beyond tomorrow, until we close up shop), we will continue to talk about sexism in the book world and out of it, and all the ways it affects our lives as readers and writers, and to yell loudly about excellent work from women authors. Meeting in the Dark Solitude and Union in D. H. Lawrences Odour of Chysanthemums and The Horse-Dealers Daughter - Literature Essay Samples

A seemingly impenetrable solitude permeates human life in D. H. Lawrences two short stories, Odour of Chrysanthemums and The Horse Dealers Daughter. Inside Lawrences fictional worlds, the thematic isolation of individuals from one another (often compounded by a profound remoteness from ones own self) situates itself as a paradoxically separating yet potentially unifying force between people but firstly, as a thoroughly cumbersome facet of the human condition. Each of Lawrences stories conveys the essential tragedy of the human condition through the ever-present reality of inevitable death. In the lives of the central characters, a precarious divorce from any true comprehension of mortality works to further complicate their confused isolation; each individual struggles mechanically in an obscure world, steeped in the burden of his daily self (Horse 2665), or appearing as Mabel does to Jack as a small black figure moving in the hollow of the failing day (2666). In Chrysanthemums, the immense gap that lies between people on earth becomes a reality to Elizabeth Bates as the tragically overdue realization brought about by a death, while in Horse, Lawrence ambiguously portrays the possibility of making amends of traversing that gap and connecting with another before time runs out.Lawrence opens each story by introducing his characters as notably still subjects in a surrounding world of motion. In Chrysanthemums, Elizabeth and her son stand waiting amidst clanking, stumbling (2647) locomotives and trucks that [thump] heavily past (2648). The reader finds the storys subjects in a fast-paced, industrial coal mining village an environment whose busy, active atmosphere highlights the quiet solitude of the people it contains, isolated from the moving world and from each other. The activity that continues in their presence is described as inevitable movement (2648), a constant progression of civilization that underscores the apparent ineffectuality of humans like Eliza beth, a wife and mother who stands insignificantly trapped between jolting black wagons (2648). Similarly, a confused tramping of horses feet serves as the backdrop to the Pervin familys despairing silences, emitting a strange air of ineffectuality (Horse 2660). Not only does Joes opening question to Mabel, what are you going to do with yourself? (2660) signify the metaphysical stillness of Lawrences central characters, but this stillness forms a gap between the family members themselves. The narrator conveys this in lines such as, [Mabel] did not share the same life as her brothers (2660). The cavalcade of horses outside furthers the sense of disaster (2661) brought about the death of Mr. Pervin. While it is principally the trains perpetual motion in Chrysanthemums that encircles the stark existence of Elizabeth, the horses that both surround and define the Pervin family take on a more complex symbolism as Joe, in a stupor of downfall (Horse 2661), compares the militant yet unaware passage of the horses to his own human circumstance:Every movement showed a massive, slumbrous strength, and a stupidity which held them in subjection. The groom at the head looked back, jerking the leading rope. And the cavalcade moved out of sight up the lane, the tail of the last horse, bobbed up tight and stiff, held out taut from the swinging great haunches as they rocked behind the hedges in a motion-like sleep. ( 2661)The massive presence of these mammals pointedly reflects the apparent power of life itself, whether animal or human; however, the harnessed state of the horses reminds the reader that a related, though less definable, burden weighs on the Pervin family and, implicitly, on all living beings whose dramatic movements are pitted with inherent subjection. Lawrence peculiarly inverts his description of the horses movement (or lack thereof): while a more typical allusion to sleepwalking would perhaps have been satisfactory to convey a horses propensity to move without autonomy, the author invokes the rather unsightly notion of motion-like sleep, thereby suggesting that the beings he describes live in perpetual half-consciousness; not fully engaged in actions, nor receptive to the guidance of others; ones life may appear to be in motion but in actuality involves no trace of free will or self-determination.With this pervasive, metaphorical slumber, the frustrating dimness of the surrounding world stresses the characters inability to see the reality of their existence (assuming, that is, that human life may be clarified at all). Significantly, Lawrence reveals that the source of his characters vague sight comes both from within, and from without. Elizabeth, for example, struggles to conquer the oppressive atmosphere when she periodically look[s] piercingly through the dusk (Chrysanthemums 2648), just as Jack Fergusson demonstrates the rare success of detecting a person in the midst of such obscurity (Horse 2666); however, a number of Lawrences char acters, both alive and deceased, are plagued with compromised vision. The eyes of Mr. Bates corpse are not only half shut but glazed in the obscurity (Chrysanthemums 2659), and the reader of Horse cannot help but relate Mabels brothers glazed hopeless eyes (2661) to the look of the dead body in Chrysanthemums. Both stories are fraught with references to the enigmatic world in which humans live and breathe; each landscape continually marked by uncertain darkness (Chrysanthemums 2650) or dim, dark grey (Horse 2667) serves to accentuate Lawrences motif of solitude in the face of inscrutable surroundings.Before either narrative develops into a discussion of connections between individuals, Lawrence paints his characters in such a self-contained light that human life appears to be a relentlessly singular experience. Throughout the familys period of waiting for Mr. Bates return in Chrysanthemums, their faces [are] hidden from each other (2650), or appear transfigured by the flickering lig ht of the fire. As it remains rare for the characters in Horse to actually look each other in the eye, Mabel sits fixed and unnoticed amongst her brothers who had talked at her and round her for so many years, that she hardly heard them at all (2662). Each central characters isolated struggle to see clearly in their own story thereby evolves into concern over seeing others clearly another human being inevitably grappling with the same earthly uncertainty. For Elizabeth, the death of her husband provides the dose of lucidity that allows her to reflect on the complexity of human relationships; faced with the oppressive presence of her husbands heavy, naked corpse in front of her, Elizabeth is overwhelmed by the separateness of his being from hers:There lies the reality, this man. And her soul died in her for fear: she knew she had never seen him, he had never seen her, they had met in the dark and had fought in the dark, not knowing whom they met nor whom they fought. And now she saw , and turned silent in seeing. For she had been wrong. She had said he was something he was not; she had felt familiar with him. Whereas he was apart all the while, living as she never lived, feeling as she never felt. (Chrysanthemums 2659)Lawrences passage highlights the symbolic darkness that circulates in the world of his characters; in each story, this darkness obscures clear vision, signifies human boundaries, and comprises a concrete representation of the line that must be crossed before individuals can truly see one another and connect. However, Elizabeths reflections at the close of Chrysanthemums are less amenable to the plausibility of conquering solitude at all. She and Mr. Bates have had the luxury of finding each other in the dark, but continued to lack genuine knowledge of each others essence. Elizabeth is struck by the realization that a consciously formed marriage could in fact be sheer artifice that the bond one seeks to form in the world can be ultimately hindered by insuperable individuality, leaving one familiar with another yet always a stranger to his or her interior experience of life. Suggestive of the massive, slumbrous strength that characterizes animal life in Horse, the burdensome weight of Mr. Bates corpse expresses to Elizabeth the sharp boundaries of the physical body and, in turn, the true horror of human solitude: A terrible dread gripped her all the while: that he could be so heavy and utterly inert, unresponsive, apart. The horror of the distance between them was almost too much for her it was so infinite a gap she must look across (Chrysanthemums 2660). Chrysanthemums is thus ambiguous about whether Mr. and Mrs. Bates lack of oneness is specific to their circumstances, or a sign of a dark consequence of the human condition: the mortal impossibility of solidarity, empathy, or love.In Horse, Jack Fergusson peers into the thick, ugly falling dusk and sees Mabel positively enough (2666). Their mutual gaze invokes in each of t hem the feeling of being found out by the other (2665), insinuating the possibility that, in this case, two characters may understand each others plight, despite their explicitly different natures. While Lawrence portrays Jacks intrigue with the innermost body (2666) of peoples lives, Mabel is, until her brush with death, immune from the world (2665). Nevertheless, Mabels portentous look penetrates Jacks fretted, daily self (2665) from across the gulf of dusk light that separates them. Lawrence thus begins to restore the hope (absent in Chrysanthemums) that some universal thread ties humans together after all; the prospect of some greater, unspecifiable significance becomes especially imminent through the union of two people struggling in the same dim light. To a certain extent, Jack and Mabels new love places the two of them in the thick of the old problems; only now, their most deeply felt experiences are shared. Even during the passionate realization of Jacks love for Mabel, deat h and inertia continue to characterize their imperturbable natures. Jack remain[s] motionless, suspended through one of mans eternities as he fears the look of death (2669) in Mabels eyes.Although the somber message of Odour of Chrysanthemums emerges through Elizabeths grievous thoughts about death and solitude, the reader of The Horse Dealers Daughter finds that what develops between Jack and Mabel offers redemption for the human nature evidenced in Lawrences earlier story. While for Elizabeth Bates a meeting in the dark can promise no more than companionship between two innately self-contained people, Jack and Mabels discovery of each other is a triumph. At the close of Chrysanthemums, Elizabeth becomes aware that life is merely a momentary guide, and death her ultimate master from which she cowers with fear and shame (2660). It is only under these terms that Jack and Mabel communicate with each other, each conscious of their fear of death, shameful of their human limitations, and aware of the horror of solitude. United by a confused reality, even the first moments that Lawrences new lovers spend together convey the emotional weight that accompanies authentic participation in anothers life. Jack consciously chooses the difficult path of love, for he want[s] to remain like that for ever, with his heart hurting him in a pain that [is] also life to him (Horse 2669). Lawrences narrative suggests that such connections may provide a source of lifeblood both painful and desirable. Heartbroken in love, Jack and Mabel will continue to sustain themselves, as though the risk of loving and possibly of losing is a manifestation of the pain of living, and of dying.

However, he first argues that the idea that everything perceived around one could be false because the senses are sometimes deceiving. In the first Meditation, Descartes introduces skepticism and brings forth a method of doubt in which he evaluates his beliefs, and questions whether they are true or false and why they should be doubted. He presents various hypothesis that prove there is reason to doubt the knowledge that one is already aware of. The most prestigious road of its kind is the â€Å"Trans Amazonian Highway. † The roads are built to connect the rain forest with Brazil’s major cities, of which the majority are situated on the coast. Although the building of these roads should not contribute to the destruction of the rainforest, due to heavy machinery and the odd careless worker many trees are being damaged unnecessarily. They are cutting down far from the minimal amount of trees possible for the project. The consequence of the Amazonian rainforest being made accessible to major cities is the increasing potential of well established and prospering businesses set to make a fortune for some poor Brazilian families. As an outcome to this are frontier towns comprised from wood extracted and transported from the rainforest. Brazil is home to millions of impoverished citizens. The general domestic standards in homes often consist of no water or electricity and fairly severe food shortages. This poor standard of life encourages many families to move west in search of better conditions in which to work and live. The government issued each family with a plot of land to cultivate and occasionally this would include a house. The poor Brazilians began to rebuild their lives, however, before their land could be utilised it had to go through the lengthy but crucial process of removing all the trees from their plot. To do this they used destructive tools like axes and chainsaws then after to get rid of any remnants of life they would burn it. This was a further problem as many fires got out of hand and lead to major forest fires. After a while it became known as â€Å"slash and burn† Once the land was clear the settlers started to plant and grow their crops, corn, manioc and sweet potatoes to feed their families. Because the settlers had know knowledge of agriculture many wasted time carrying procedures to no effect. At first their crops were productive, however, because there were no trees left to shield the soil from the penetrating sun it soon dried out and the yield sunk into decline. After ten years there was nothing to harvest, so, the settlers packed up their positions and moved on to another plot to start again. After another ten years the same thing would happen and they would move to another plot. Many millions of trees were destroyed in this way. However after approximately thirty years the area the settlers had originally inhabited had re grown, so the people alternated between plots. These people were nicknamed as â€Å"the shifting cultivators. Although this did contribute to destroying the rainforest they were not major destroyers. An additional Contribution to the destruction of the rainforest is the trading of forest land to large companies who in exchange give money to the Brazilians. These companies are not concerned for the welfare of the forests and its wildlife. Their main interest is establishing their businesses so they will become a thriving success. However before they can commence with the construction work the forest trees have to be cleared quickly and therefore the most efficient method of doing this is fire. This process proves fatal to the environment in a wide variety of different ways. Firstly when trees are burned it causes an enormous amount of smoke and consequently lots of pollution. In addition, fire is extremely unpredictable, and depending on the direction of the wind any forest adjacent to the plot of land possessed by the company is under the risk of also being burned. This form of destruction is also far worse for the animals inhabiting the forest, because, unlike the chopping down of trees the animals have a minimal opportunity of survival†¦ early every living organism is slaughtered. The citizens of the forest are also endangered, many people die this way. Beef is currently in considerable demand all over the world; people just can’t get enough of it. The poor people of Brazil saw this as a great opportunity to make money and consequently started purchasing large ranches in the rainforest in which to nurture and breed their cattle. However, once the cows have consumed all the grass and vegetation in one field they are transferred to another, this system goes on all the time. In consequence to huge areas of land being trodden on for many years, the soil looses its fertility and therefore no seeds or crops can survive. This system is increasingly being used around Brazil and is by far the biggest and worst destroyer. For years, areas of the rainforest have been destroyed by fire for varying causes. Subsequently, all this pollution is adding to the already horrific situation of global warming. If the pollution of are planet continues at this rapid rate in as little as 100 years many peoples lives could be ruined. Islands similar to Guernsey could be completely beneath the sea. No country, person or animal will escape the effects of human disregard for the environment around us. Mining is another industry destroying the Rainforest. Large areas of land are dug up by companies wanting to make money from the precious minerals. The types of substances extracted are, tin, mananes, aluminium, iron and copper. Mining is a huge business and there are lots of additional expenses which have to be considered. For example more space is needed to provide the minors with hospitable accommodation, it is also necessary for 1000 km of railway to be dug for exporting the finished products to their required destinations. More lines are being built at an extremely fast speed. As much as 2 and a half km of the track is built a day and therefore it is not the workers priority, how they get rid of the trees and wildlife. All this construction is at the expense of the plants and animals. Charcoal making is a large occupation for many Brazilian citizens. However, because of the pollution it sends into the atmosphere it is adding to the greenhouse affect. The process of making charcoal involves baking the wood in a small mound of earth surrounded by sticks it takes a lot of time, experience and care. Charcoal is in such demand that 4 tonnes of wood only lasts for 4 minutes in a factory. Brazil is home to the 4th largest dam in the world. The purpose of these huge structures (built mostly in the 80’s and 90’s) is to generate cheap electricity. However, some people say they make more than can be used in Brazil, because the Brazilians don’t use many electrical items. The dams function by a series of clever but complicated methods; all rivers start in hills, and therefore flow down the side of the mountain or hill into the sea or a lake. As the water is flowing down the hill inevitably gathers speed and it is this speed that can be converted into electricity by things called turbines. These turbines are comprised of a large wall built across the river. A small amount of water is let through a small gap, but the rest builds up behind the wall building up force to get through the gap. It is this force which generates the electricity; because inside the turbine there is a wheel which is being turned by the force of the water this can then be transformed into electricity. Brazil makes hydro electricity. However, there are many downsides to this method of resource preserving. Firstly due to the turbine a lot of the forest has been flooded by the water which overflows. Many animals have drowned and the smaller species which in future will prove vital in the ecosystem had no chance of survival. Even the lucky ones who were rescued appeared to be suffering. The pollution is so bad that the water has become acid and therefore unsafe. The Brazilians were promised that a certain percentage of profits would be donated to support them, however, this has not been the case. It has turned out that Brazil did not originally have the money to fund this project so they borrowed money from large companies and are still paying it back, with interest! The people in charge of the project it appears have also overlooked some simple ways of making money and at the same time utilising the forest; they could have sold the trees they flooded and in exchange received additional funding. This was an extremely expensive project with what at the end appears to be no final product. The Brazilians can’t use all the electricity being generated. The flooding of the rainforest also disadvantages the Brazilian indigenous peoples. The land protected and preserved for them is being also destroyed along with its citizens. All the thousands of natives who inhabit the forest are being endangered because of the different people such as gold miners, forest workers and dam builder’s bringing with them new viruses and diseases which they are not immune to and consequently can not fight off. Gold mining is the final thing which is decimating the forests, to extract the gold they blast the banks with powerful water hoses which erode the river sides. They also use arsenic, which is a poison to extract the gold. The water is consequently polluted and the fish inedible. The land becomes toxic and unusable forever. In conclusion, I strongly believe that if this disrespect for one of the most beautiful natural phenomena’s of the world refuses to cease, the human race will have destroyed it before we truly recognise what cures and life saving treatment it can offer us. The Amazonian Rainforest is being sabotaged so quickly that unless some drastic action is taken quickly we will never realise the full potential of the forest. America is a land of immigrants, also referred to as the melting pot of the world. However, the possibility that Americas kettle is over-flowing concerns its citizens and some politicians. Ideas for capping immigration have been voiced in the past, but have not been heard. While some will argue legal immigration should have no restrictions, most Americans will agree illegal immigration is indeed a problem. With some 6 million people living in America illegally, and only 46, 750 deportations last year, a solution must take hold soon (Zarembo 26). President George W. Bush has been working on a plan to reform immigration that could make millions of undocumented workers legal. Bush may only open the application for legal residency to Mexicans, but nothing will be final for at least another year. As a result of negotiations, mayhem has broken out on Capitol Hill, with politicians pulling fiercely on both sides. Some believe this will trigger more illegal immigrants to migrate to America, and in turn cost the already tax-paying citizens more money. On the other side, politicians believe it is about principle; accepting all people who are here, legal or illegal (Zarembo 25). The fact still remains Americas population is growing rapidly each day, whether or not there is room, schools, or work for more immigrants. Immigrants who have lived in America, legally, for years have views separate from politicians whom many have lived here all their lives. The incentive for many immigrants to flock to America is for the opportunities it will offer their children. They come looking for their own piece of life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, freedom, and to escape from lives of poverty and war. In the 2000 census, ten percent of Americans were born in other countries and in 1990, 32 million US residents spoke a language other than English at home, a number that has undoubtedly risen in the past 11 years (Swerdlow 46-47). Although America has become the land of immigrants, tolerance is not always upheld in the school scene, where teenage students are more concerned about gossip and the latest styles of hair and clothes to recognize the greater need for an open-minded society. Many immigrant students come to America and assimilate very nicely to the ways of life, mainly because they have learned to speak English. About one fifth of high school immigrant students are not even literate in their native language, making the task of learning English much harder (Swerdlow 50). Immigrant students who struggle with English often drop out because they have become discouraged or need to work in order to help support their families (Swerdlow 51). They work for eight dollars and hour or less, taking the jobs that no one actually wants; restaurant work and house keeping for example (Swerdlow 60). A possible solution in terms of immigration is not to open our arms to illegal immigrants, but to embrace those looking for a happy future. If America cracks down on the number of illegal immigrants, there will be more space for those who come with the purpose of making America a better mixture of cultures. The incentive for immigrants to come here illegally is the possibility they can work in America without paying taxes. There is no way around paying taxes as a legal resident of the United States, however a one year tax break could be offered to those coming here from poverty in order to get their bearings. The problem of who should get this tax break might cause a stir in communities all across America. Legal citizens will claim they did not get a tax break when coming to the land of freedom, and still made it on their own. As for American citizens, the complaint of paying for the immigrants children to attend public schools, may cause even more of a controversy. Nonetheless, to open our already weighted arms to illegal immigrants is an idea the tax-paying citizens can do without. Allowing them to come to America without paying any taxes yet reaping the benefits is costing Americans more money than they bargained for.
